Preparation and characterization of spin polarized tips for tunneling microscopy

Spin-polarized scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) offers a unique capability to study magnetic properties of single atoms or molecules. Scanning tips from classic materials like Fe and Cr are hard to prepare. Tips from Mn88Ni12 are easier and faster to prepare and deliver the same resolution as commercial tips. This work confirms the spin polarization of Mn88Ni12 tips and improves their preparation method.  I doubled the success rate of etching these tips and shortened the preparation time to 15-20 seconds from 4-5 minutes. This method allows faster on-site preparation of spin-polarized STM tips and is cheaper. The cost per tip is under 10€ compared to commercial tips sold above 100€.
